Circuit Zandvoort - Racing Circuit

Circuit Zandvoort has for many years been a key attraction for people to come and visit this small Dutch coastal resort.

Motor racing was popular in the area as far back as the 1930s when the local VVV organised races on the north side of Zandvoort. At first a basic circuit was used but for safety reasons soon led to the need for a proper, self contained racing circuit and 112 hectares of dune land was turned into a 4 km racing track in 1941.

Asphalted in 1948, the Circuit Zandvoort went on to host many motor racing highlights (1952 Grand Prix, 1961 Grand Prix etc).

The last world championship race at Circuit Zandvoort took place in 1985.

Zandvoort Hotels, Campsites & Caravans

Zandvoort is a popular destination for day trippers from Amsterdam and indeed most parts of The Netherlands. It is also a favourite of many German people who come here for their summer vacation or long weekends if there is a special event taking place.

There is a whole events list that brings people in - from music festivals to racing at the Circuit Zandvoort.

It's no surprise therefore to learn that there can be a big demand for accommodation in Zandvoort, especially during these special events. Hotels, guest houses (aka Pensions) and campsites fill up very quickly. Most apartments are booked well in advance and generally for longer periods.

Orange Zandvoort

Here is another photograph from July when everyone in The Netherlands seemed to 'go orange'.

This was taken in Zandvoort and shows the top part of a building with a pub underneath. Keen to attract visitors to come in and watch the Soccer World cup, they dressed the building in orange flags, hung a Dutch national flag from the top window and draped plastic, inflated footballs down the outside.

The additional orange sign in the photograph carried a football emblem with the words "Holland WK 2010 - Binnen Voetbal Kijken"

Zandvoort bars are always welcoming to both regular and new visitors. If you are planning to visit Zandvoort you will need to check out Zandvoort accommodation well in advance as it can get very busy if there are special sporting events taking place such as at the Circuit Zandvoort.

A New Year For Zandvoort

Another year passes and so we move onto another New Year - 2010. One of the first things many people do in January is to start planning their summer holidays. Some people choose a destination in a hot climate such as Thailand or Jamaica or Florida; some people prefer to stay in their home country; some people enjoy history so travel to places with interesting historical backgrounds; some people like to go to where there is lots happening - perhaps sporting events, music festivals, craft and antiques fairs ... the list is endless!

2010 in Zandvoort should be an interesting year with plenty of sporting events taking place at the Circuit Zandvoort and the usual plethera of 'special events' organised during the summer months. There was a great food festival in the town in August last year with local restaurant and bar owners all cooking food in small marquees for the pleasure of the town's people and tourists. Here is a great photo of Ron Brouwers, owner of the Laurel and Hardy (one of the best bars in Zandvoort), cooking for hungry diners. A great guy and always great food - and doesn't he look like Oliver Hardy?!

July and August are usually great months for activities in Zandvoort and if the sun shines too .... well that's about as good as it can get!

Zandvoort Webcams

If you want to see what the weather is like in Zandvoort you can always try the Zandvoort Webcams which are now linked from our website. You can view different parts of the beach and coastline or the main boulevard or even catch a glimpse of the internationally famous Zandvoort racetrack or Circuit Zandvoort as it's locally known. The racetrack brings many racing car fans to Zandvoort each year of course, as it has done since the 1930's and although F1 races no longer take place there, it is still a popular venue for F3 racing. A detailed history of the Circuit Zandvoort is available on Wikipedia.
